Activity 5: Tone

Scene from Pixar's film "Ratatouille" of a rat pointing his finger at a man in a chef hat, outside on a dark corner near a street lamp.
Part A: In the above image, how is tone used to help create emphasis and direct the viewer’s eye?
  • What mood is conveyed?
  • What kind of contrast is used (low, higher, highest?)
Part B: Draw a row of 7 boxes. At one end, make the box as dark as possible. At the other end, leave the box empty. Fill in the rest of the boxes so that they gradually go from dark to light. You can do this with a pencil, pen, marker, paintbrush or anything else!
Seven boxes, each shaded a little bit more than the previous one. The first box is nearly white and the last box is nearly black.
Part C: On the sheet of paper you drew your movement lines, try adding shading to show different values of light and dark. Try to create emphasis and help direct your viewer’s eye to the most important element of your scene.

    Part A:
It shows that the spotlight is sort of on the person and that he is the highest. I think it sets the tone of how the rat maybe has an idea and that the light in the back is kind of representing that.

    What mood is conveyed?
The mood that is conveyed is mysterious because it is darker.
What kind of contrast is used (low, higher, highest?)
The kind of contrast that's used is higher because the only light that there is, is faced to the heads of the mouse and the guy to draw our attention to them

    What mood is conveyed?
Mysterious and wonder (a strange encounter between a naive human and a curious mouse)
What kind of contrast is used (low, higher, highest?)
It's highest. First, the light is used to direct us to Remi and Linguinni, here the characters are the key, while the background is darker. This creates a high contrast to their first encounter, creating feeling of excitement, wonder, doubts in a mysterious atmosphere.

Part A: the ray of light is falling on top of the characters, directing towards them. the mood is sort of like excitement or Hope or the moment when an idea is born. the contrast is highest.

The mood conveyed would probably be excitement or wonder. The contrast for this scene shows mostly at the top, slowly getting darker as your eyes go down to the bottom of the image.

    PART A:
What Mood is Conveyed?: To me, the background conveys a bit of a spooky atmosphere, sort of like a haunted town where monsters live. Maybe something like Nightmare Before Christmas or Scream Street, or maybe Charles Dicken's Christmas Carol. The characters seem to be arguing to me. I get the feeling that Remi is asking the chef to sneak into some place, and the chef is refusing (never seen the movie, so this is just my guess). I imagine them to be next to an old factory or grand house of some sort where homeless people are sheltering? I don't know but I seem to get an 1800's Sherlock Holmes London vibe from the image.
What kind of contrast is used?: Higher. The lampshade creates a stark contrast between the dark mist around the characters, but I think it could be much brighter. So I would say Higher.
