Writing decimals as fractions
To convert a decimal to a fraction, we write the decimal number as a numerator and we write its place value as the denominator.
If there is a number to the left of the decimal point, we keep that number as a whole number.

- How would you express 5.03 as a fraction?(43 votes)
- The answer is 5 3/100 (mixed fraction) or 503/100 (improper fraction).(10 votes)
- I know 0.1 is 1 tenth. 0.01 is 1 hundredth. 0.001 is 1 thousandth. But what is 0.0001?(11 votes)
- .0001 is 1 ten thousandths.(2 votes)
- How do you write a fraction? It keeps getting it wrong.(8 votes)
- You write a fraction using the "slash" symbol (/).
You place the numerator before the slash and denominator behind the same slash. So for example three fourths would be 3/4.
In case of mixed numbers you write the whole number and leave space for the fraction. So two and three fifths would be 2 3/5.
Hope this helps.(13 votes)
- They should fix the last question because it says express 5.03 as a fraction and some people will think oh that's easy it's 503/100 but it says it's wrong and the right answer is 5 and 3/100 which is right(8 votes)
- It asks for either a proper fraction or a mixed number so 503/100 is not correct (a fraction is only proper if its numerator is smaller than its denominator)(6 votes)
- How can you express 18.7?(8 votes)
- 18.7 = 18 7/10 or 187/10(3 votes)
- so say i had a question like convert 0.023 into a fraction. would it be 100 or 1000??(7 votes)
- You would convert that into the thousandths. The answer is 23/1000.(5 votes)
- How do I do 56.3 in fractions?(2 votes)
- First, multiply the decimal by powers of 10 such that you don't have a decimal.
56.3 * 10¹
= 563
Add 10¹ to the denominator
563 / 10
Depending on what fractions you prefer.
If you want a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator and get its integral part.
⌊563 / 10⌋ = 56 (We use ⌊x⌋ to denote getting the integral part of a number)
Multiply the result by the denominator, and subtract the numerator by the this result.
56 * 10 = 560
563 - 560 = 3
56 (³⁄₁₀)(2 votes)
- Please am confused about the difference between tens and tenths(2 votes)
- A tenth = 0.10 = 1 out of 10
Ten = 10 = 10 ones (1s)(1 vote)
- I'm confused about how you would express 5.03 as a fraction. Wouldn't that be a mixed number?(1 vote)
- 5.03 can be made a mixed number or improper fraction. As a mixed number, 5.03 is 5 3/100. As an improper fraction, 5.03 is 503/100.
