- think about like this: if you want to divide shift the decimal point to the left based on the numbers of zeros. for example if you want to divide 4.25 ÷ 10 you will shift the decimal point one time to the left (because there is one zero in the ten). if you want to divide 4.35 ÷ 100 you will shift the decimal point two times to the left because there is two zeros in the 100.(18 votes)

- When multiplying by a power of 10 (such as 10, 100, 1000, etc), move the decimal point the same number of places to the right as there are zeros in the power of 10.

When dividing by a power of 10, move the decimal point the same number of places to the left as there are zeros in the power of 10.
