# Dividing a decimal by a whole number

In this math lesson, we learn how to divide decimals using long division. The key is to place the decimal point correctly and treat it like a regular long division problem. By following these steps, we can easily divide 5.005 by 7, resulting in an answer of 0.715. Created by Sal Khan.

- 7 does not go into 5, so it must be zero. 7 does go into 50 7 times with 1 remainder. Not sure how you learned it to get a 1 there.(8 votes)

- Since 0.23 has two numbers behind the decimal, we would multiply it by 100 to get 23. Then, in order to make it even, we would also have to multiply 3 by 100, giving us 23/300.(4 votes)

- So if you learn how to divide two fractions, reciprocate the denominator and multiply, you can do this easily. If you have (3/2)/(4/9) reciprocate 4/9 to get 9/4 and multiply 3/2 * 4/9. If you understand this, do the same with dividing by whole numbers such as (3/2)/4. Change 4 to 4/1, so (3/2)/(4/1) = 3/2 * 1/4. The whole number will always just be multiplied by the denominator.(7 votes)

- so i was studying and got this question that i couldn't answer the question is 0.0001/200

and i know the answer which is 5×10^-7

but the problem is that idk how did we solve this thing like how bec earlier i used the calculator(3 votes)- How well do you know scientific notation? If you convert both to scientific notation, you get 1x10^-4/2x10^2. Rearranging gives 1/2 * 10^-4/10^2, to divide common bases, you subtract the exponents to get .5x10^-6, moving decimal to right adds one more negative (think .5x10/10 x10*-6) to get the answer you give. If you set it up like a regualar division problem, you would have to go to .0001000/200 which gives .0000005 which is the equivalent answer.(6 votes)

- ON top of my other question I just posted its has been suggested to just add a zero and keep going. I have noticed this also dose not work.. Sal if you see this please post another video that explains how to solve in cases like 6 divided by 0.75 or 6 divided by 0.03. So far everyone's comments haven't completed my knowledge. Let's see if we can divide
5.005 by-- let's divide it by 7, and see what we get. So we can rewrite this
as 5.005 divided by 7. And the key here is to
keep track of the decimal. But other than
that, you're really treating it like a traditional
long division problem. So you want to put
the decimal, it's to the right of the ones place. So it's right over there. I just put the decimal
right above the decimal. And now we would
treat it just like a traditional long
division problem. So how many times
does 7 go into 5? Well, it goes into
5 zero times, and we could write 0 times 7 is 0. Actually, let's do
that, just to show that it works to kind of do the
process all the way through. 0 times 7 is 0. You subtract, you get 5. So you get this 5
right over here. So you get 5, and then we
can bring down another 0. We bring down this
0 right over here. So now we ask ourselves, how
many times does 7 go into 50? Well, 7 times 7 is 49, so
it's going to go seven times. 7 times 7, 49. Subtract, you get 1. And now we can
bring down this 0. Let's do that. We bring down that 0. 7 goes into 10 one time. 1 times 7 is 7. Subtract, get a 3. And now finally, we
can bring down this 5. We can bring down the 5. And we ask ourselves, how
many times does 7 go into 35? Well, 5 times 7 is 35. This goes 5 times. 5 times 7 is 35. Subtract, and we are done. We have divided it completely. And so 5.005 divided
by 7 is equal to 0.715.
