# Points on the coordinate plane

Plot points on the coordinate plane in all four quadrants.

In this article, we're going to plot points in the coordinate plane. We'll start in the first quadrant.

### Example: Plotting the point left parenthesis, start color #11accd, 7, end color #11accd, comma, start color #e07d10, 4, end color #e07d10, right parenthesis

Let's start by going to start color #11accd, 7, end color #11accd on the x-axis:

Now we go up start color #e07d10, 4, end color #e07d10, and plot the point left parenthesis, start color #11accd, 7, end color #11accd, comma, start color #e07d10, 4, end color #e07d10, right parenthesis:

### Practice

### Example: Plotting the point left parenthesis, start color #11accd, minus, 5, end color #11accd, comma, start color #e07d10, minus, 9, end color #e07d10, right parenthesis

Let's start by going to start color #11accd, minus, 5, end color #11accd on the x-axis:

Now we go down start color #e07d10, 9, end color #e07d10, and plot the point left parenthesis, start color #11accd, minus, 5, end color #11accd, comma, start color #e07d10, minus, 9, end color #e07d10, right parenthesis:

- I'm confused, how is it 2.5?(88 votes)
- Its 2.5 because if you look its between 2 and 3 so mathematically between 2 and 3 has to be 2.5. Its pretty easy for me so ask questions if you have any.(75 votes)

- my mom made me do this(21 votes)
- When you do math, it is ok if you don’t like it because it isn’t that easy to start liking it. But It is also important that you understand and at least like it a little, too. It’s really important you’re learning.(2 votes)

- i don't get how to do this if b is in the middle of -3 and -2 what is the answer?(15 votes)
- the answer would be -2.5(7 votes)

- how do i know how the graph will be palced(10 votes)
- It's always the same no matter what sometimes the numbers are placed different but that's it.(5 votes)

- what happens when a letter is in the y axis(9 votes)
- The X-axis is horizontal (left and right) and the Y-axis is vertical (up and down). Basically; for the Y-axis, just go up for positive numbers, and down for negative.(9 votes)

- How can I count how many units away something is(5 votes)
- If you had two points, (-5, 2) and (3, 2), you would add 5 and 3, which would give you 8, so (-5, 2) and (3, 2) are 8 units away. I hope you understand this better, but it is hard to explain because your question was so broad.(16 votes)

- 5th grade doesnt to the other 3 quadtants(6 votes)
- The other three quadrants have one or both coordinates negative. Most 5th graders either have not yet learned about negative numbers, or are just starting to learn about negative numbers. I’m sure you will encounter the other three quadrants after the next one or two higher grade levels.

Have a blessed, wonderful day!(6 votes)

- Which number do I look at when I start graphing(7 votes)
- Why can't you use quadrant 4 for plotting -8,6? Why do you have to use quadrant 2?(5 votes)
- It is because you always start with the X axis, not the Y axis. If it was ( 6, -8).(10 votes)

- i am confused on the negative numbers(6 votes)
- negative numbers are numbers less than zero. FOr example on the x axis, the left side consists of numbers that are negative meaning left on 0,0(origin) which is in the middle. On the right side are positive numbers. On Y, the upper side is positive, and the down side are negative numbers. Hope that helps!(8 votes)
