• Cross-multiplying is often used to solve proportions. As an example:
14/20 = x/100
Then multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the denominator of the second fraction:
1400 =
Then, multiply the denominator of the first fraction by the numerator of the second, and you will get:
1400 = 20x.
Solve by dividing both sides by 20. The answer is 70.

• We could, but it would be a little confusing and complicated. For instance, instead of using CD/CE at , we could have made it something else that would give us the direct answer to DE. We could have put in DE + 4 instead of CE and continued solving. But it's safer to go the normal way.
