# How to convert kg to mg and T to oz

Sal converts kilograms to milligrams and tons to ounces.  Created by Sal Khan.

• what if you comparing 7 quarts and 3 tons?
• Well, quarts are a measurement of volume/space, and tons are a measurement of weight, so they aren't exactly interchangeable. A quart of strawberries could weigh a different amount than a quart of rocks. You'd have to find out how much 7 quarts of the item you're measuring is in pounds or tons, then do the math. :)
• How do you convert US customary to metric system
• They can't be converted using normal maths. You have to know what any one US customary system unit is in a metric system unit.
• how many grams eqeal a kilogram
• The word "kilo" means 1000.

1 kilogram
= 1000 x 1 gram
= 1000 grams
So 1 kilogram equals 1000 grams

You can do the same thing anytime you see kilo - just multiply the unit x 1000. For example, convert 25 kilometers to meters:

25 kilometers
= 1000 x 25 meters
= 25,000 meters
So 25 kilometers equals 25,000 meters

Hope this helps!
• why does milli mean 1out of 1,000?
• Because milli means 1/1000
• How many grams are in a liter?
• 1 gram is a measurement of mass and 1 liter is a measurement of volume. There are things that takes up more space (large volume) but are quite light (small mass), such as the gas helium. 1 liter of helium weighs 0.18 grams. In comparison, 1 liter of the metal mercury weighs about 14000 grams.
• how come 10 is a factor of 100?
• Because 10 x 10 (factors) (10 added 10 times) equals 100 (product).
• Can you put another tutorial for all metric units?
• This is confusing and this is hard understanding
• You just have to remember the conversion table.

Big units (kg,lb,km) to small units (oz,m,g) is going to use multiplication, small units to big units is going to use division.

1 Kg = 1000 g
Formula: (number of kg) x 1000 = __
Example: 3 kg x 1000 = 3000 g

1 g = 0.001 kg
Formula: (number of grams) / 1000 kg = __
Example: 3g / 1000 kg = 0.003
