Lesson 1: Coordinate plane

# Graphing coordinates review

Review graphing points on a coordinate plane, and try some practice problems.

## Ordered pairs

Ordered pairs are made up of two numbers. The first number is the $x$-coordinate and the second number is the $y$-coordinate: $\left(x,y\right)$.

## Graphing ordered pairs

To graph an ordered pair, we start at the origin. Next, we move right (positive) or left (negative) to the $x$-coordinate. From there, we move up (positive) or down (negative) to the $y$-coordinate.
Example 1: $\left(6,-8\right)$
To graph $\left(6,-8\right)$, we move $\text{right 6}$ from the origin $\left(0,0\right)$, then $\text{down 8}$ from there.
Example 2: $\left(0,-9\right)$
To graph $\left(0,-9\right)$, we move $\text{right 0}$ from the origin $\left(0,0\right)$, then $\text{down 9}$ from there.

## Practice

Problem 1
Drag the dots to plot $\left(6,-8\right)$, $\left(2,7\right)$, and $\left(1,-4\right)$.

• X goes first. Y goes second. So if it is (3, 8), then you graph 3 on the x axis and 8 on the y axis
• Imagine you are building a house and you want the kitchen to be in the exact middle of the house. That is where the origin is. If you divide your house into four groups than each group(going counterclockwise) is one quadrant. The lines that divide it make up the X-axis and Y-axis. If you are still confused you can always ask me
• What’s x axis what’s the purpose why do we have it what’s the y axis why do we have it do we need it do we want it
• what do you do when there is things in the middle on the coordinate plane?
• if you are talking about the very middle, it is the origin thus meaning it equals 0.
• help me im so bad with math
• X goes first. Y goes second. So if it is (3, 8), then you graph 3 on the x axis and 8 on the y axis
• x go frist they y
• yeah that's correct
• x is first y is second right?
• Yes, x is first and y is second.
