Cellular respiration
Review your understanding of cellular respiration in this free article aligned to NGSS standards.
Key points:
- Cellular respiration is a process that happens inside an organism’s cells. This process releases energy that can be used by the organism to live and grow.
- Many food molecules are broken down into glucose, a simple sugar. Glucose is used in cellular respiration.
- Glucose and oxygen are inputs of cellular respiration. Carbon dioxide and water are outputs. This can be seen in the overall equation for cellular respiration:
- In multicellular organisms, the steps of cellular respiration occur in the cytosol and the mitochondria.

- I don’t understand how both animal and plant cells release carbon dioxide during cellular respiration? I’m probably confusing it with photosynthesis but how are they different? They seem to serve the same function (i.e.: usable energy to grow and store.)(21 votes)
- Photosynthesis uses energy (from the sun) to convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen. Then the glucose can be stored for later use. Cellular respiration turns glucose and oxygen into water and carbon dioxide, releasing energy for the organism to use.
Does that help?(41 votes)
- isn't respiration basically breathing?(12 votes)
- Technically speaking, breathing is the process of ventilating air in and out of your body, while respiration is the mitochondrial task of using the gases you breathe to create energy. Both processes work so closely together that the terms could be used interchangably in a broad sense, but there is a difference between the two.(17 votes)
- the other name for simple sugar is known as monosaccharides(12 votes)
- why Many food molecules are broken down into glucose, a simple sugar. Glucose is used in cellular respiration.(9 votes)
- How does your body turn glucose and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water(5 votes)
- Chemistry. A chemical reaction occurs inside your mitochondria that results in the rearranging of the atoms in the inputs.(9 votes)
- what does glucose mean(5 votes)
- its a simple sugar and its your body's main source of energy(7 votes)
- Can fish drown? because people can suffocate.(6 votes)
- What is mitochondria(2 votes)
- mitochondria are the organelles that convert sugars and oxygen into carbon dioxide, water, and energy.(8 votes)
- what are inputs of cellular respiration?(4 votes)
- what comes in(4 votes)
